PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which prevents degradation in the display quality due to residual bubbles when a substrate is laminated on a binder dispersion type display layer, and to provide a method for manufacturing the element. SOLUTION: A display layer 13 is formed ((B) in the figure) by applying a dispersion liquid prepared by dispersing microcapsules having a cholesteric liquid crystal as the core material in a binder resin solution to a substrate 11a (A) where an electrode 12a is formed and then drying the applied liquid. Then a light shielding layer 14 is formed (C), and an adhesive layer 16 is formed thereon (D). A photoconductive layer 15 is formed (F) on a substrate 11b (E) where an electrode 12b is formed. The substrate 11a and the substrate 11b after those layers are formed are laminated (G) to obtain the display element 1. The rough pattern produced on the surface of the display layer 13 is decreased by the light shielding layer 14 and is filled with the adhesive layer 16. Even when air bubbles are produced on the back of the light shielding layer 14, the bubbles are invisible, and gives no influence on the display quality. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
