Passenger safety system esp. for motor vehicles consists of two-part airbag, one part to displace armrest during inflation, and second part to protect passengers

The safety system has an airbag (14) opening into airbag area in the vehicle interior, and an armrest on a mount. When the system is actuated, the armrest (11) is moved away from the airbag area (15) in direction of the vehicle outside, by a movement device. The device is formed by the airbag, which applies a displacement force to the armrest. In inactive position, the airbag is contained in a part (13) of the vehicle interior (7) next to the armrest mount (6). The part is e.g. a front seat, and the airbag is pref. mounted in the side of the backrest. The airbag consists of at least two part airbags, with a first part acting to displace the armrest, and the second part for passenger protection.
