PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can improve the separability of transfer paper from an image carrier, such as a photoreceptor, by changing the intrinsic characteristics of the transfer paper in a simple manner prior to transfer. SOLUTION: A prior to-transfer conveyor route is provided with an upper guide 15 of a transfer inlet, a member 16 for deforming the leading end of the transfer paper, and a lower guide plate 17 of the transfer inlet. The member 16 has a fulcrum for rotation within the guide plate 17 and is supported by an elastic member, such as a spring, in such a manner that the member can be fallen toward the guide plate 17. In addition, the member is rotated and energized toward the direction where the member parts from the guide plate 17. The leading end of the transfer paper P conveyed to the device is deformed to the direction of a photoreceptor drum 1 by the impact of the collision of the paper against the member 16. Even the transfer paper having good smoothness is reduced in the contact area with the drum 1 and the attraction force to the drum 1 is made smaller. A separation defect is thus prevented.
