<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable displacement compressor for reducing the weight of a swash plate while ensuring the strength required for a projection on the swash plate side, and reducing the power consumption during the OFF operation even when a hinge mechanism of a simple configuration is employed at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: A rotor 17 is provided on a drive shaft 16 rotatably supported by a housing in an integrally rotatable manner, and a swash plate 18 is slidably and tiltably supported by the drive shaft 16. A hinge mechanism 19 interposed between the rotor 17 and the swash plate 18 comprises a rotor side projection 43, a swash plate side projection 44 which is abutted on and engaged with the rotor side projection 43 to receive the rotational force from the rotor 17, and a cam part 45 which is slidably abutted to a tip of the swash plate side projection 44 to support the load in the axial direction applied to the swash plate 18.
