PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for separating a nucleic acid in which the nucleic acid can be isolated/purified from various kinds of biosamples in a large amount of recovery in high purity without using phenol/chloroform. SOLUTION: A reagent for separating the nucleic acid comprising a tetraphenylboron compound is represented by general formula (I) [wherein, n denotes an integer of 0, 1 or 2; when n is 1 or 2, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are mutually each the same or different substituent and denote each a halogen atom, a 1-4C alkyl group or an ether group (including a group in which a part of carbon atoms are substituted with halogen atoms); and M denotes an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal]. The nucleic acid can be recovered by dissolving the objective biosamples in a dissolving buffer solution, then adding an inorganic salt or an organic salt in the presence of the reagent for separating the nucleic acid and thereby precipitating components of the biosamples other than the objective nucleic acid.
