PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct a stable seek operation even though a reproduction only recording medium and a recording medium for recording are used in a mixed manner. SOLUTION: The seek controller controls the seek operation in which a head is moved in the direction that crosses tracks respectively formed on a reproduction only recording medium and a recordable recording medium. The controller is provided with a discriminating means which discriminates the kind of a recording medium, a first seek operation control means which is used when the discriminated medium is a recording medium for reproduction, a second seek operation control means which is used when the discriminated medium is a recording medium for recording and a selecting means which conducts switching selection of the first and the second seek operation control means based on the discrimination result of the discriminating means.
