A method for controlling an automatic transmission, comprising the steps of gear-shifting a transmission to a traveling gear position, gear-shifting the transmission to neutral position when a vehicle speed increases to a specified value or higher in the state of start waiting when a mechanical clutch is disengaged, engaging the mechanical clutch, determining based on a variation in rotation on a drive side or a driven side in a process for engaging the mechanical clutch whether the transmission is reversely rotated or not, and prohibiting the gear-shifting to the traveling position if the transmission is reversely rotated when an accelerator pedal is depressed beyond a specified angle or a gear-shift instruction is inputted from a gear-shift lever or, if the transmission is not reversely rotated, gear-shifting to the traveling gear position according to the depressed state or the gear-shift instruction.
