<p>A primary carrier or slide is prepared, with cells adhering to a surface suited for growth. Controlled culture forms a cell layer. A section of the carrier and layer is separated. A secondary carrier is procured, with a surface suited for growth and adherence of the cells. Section and secondary carrier are positioned so that cells can grow over, from one to the other. The cells are grown-on, forming a layer on the second carrier surface. The primary carrier, prepared by adhesion of cells, is divided for positioning as described. The carriers are transparent, to permit microscopy from below, with top illumination. Carriers comprise vessels containing nutrient or buffer for the cells. The nutrient in the secondary carrier is dosed with one or more test substances. Growth over, multiplication and/or nature of cells on the secondary carrier, is monitored and determined, especially by microscopy. Further developments and variations based on the foregoing principles are described. The primary and secondary carriers share a common substrate.
