PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming optical system suitable for image-forming light from an "optical modulation element for which fine optical modulation parts are one-dimensionally arrayed" on a display surface.

SOLUTION: In the image forming optical system 20, the optical modulation element 10 for which the fine optical modulation parts are one-dimensionally arrayed is defined as an object and a luminous flux from the optical modulation element 10 is guided as object light and image-formed one-dimensionally on an image surface 60. Two or more anamorphic surfaces having radius curvatures different in a V direction which is the array direction of the optical modulation part and in an H direction orthogonal to the V direction on an object surface are provided and image forming surfaces in the V direction and in the H direction match with each other.
