PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which skin density is not changed even when an influence of a change in the amount of the light of a light source is affected when a skin is removed. SOLUTION: An analog image signal amplified by a signal amplifier 9 is applied to a peak holding amplifier 11 and an A/D converter 10. A gain G1 in response to a skin removing degree designated via an operating unit 18 is calculated by a CPU 17 and applied to the amplifier 11 via a D/A converter 12. Accordingly, a peak value of the image signal amplified by the amplifier 9 is held in response to the gain G1 of the amplifier 11. Here, the held peak value is magnified by gain G2 times in a reference regulating amplifier 13, and applied as a reference voltage Vref1 to the converter 10.
