PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a monolithic unit that can carry out the sustained release of an effective component at a constant rate to the last. SOLUTION: This monolithic unit for carrying out the sustained release of the effective component comprises (a) at least one swelling layer containing one or more of the effective components in a matrix of a hydrophilic and swelling polymer thereof and (b) at least one erodible and/or soluble layer in contact with the swelling layers (a), comprising a water-soluble vehicle and/or a polymer that may contain one or more effective components being the same as or different from those contained in the layer (a).
