PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which quickly and appropriately eliminates the show-through effect of the rear image of a double-sided document. SOLUTION: In a copier 1, a rear image determination section 6 divides image data on the rear face of the double-sided document in a form of a booklet read with a document reading section 5 into predetermined regions, and determines that only a region with an image of a predetermined standard density is a rear image region. When the document reading section 5 reads the whole two spread pages of the double-sided document in the booklet form, a show-through effect removing means performs its removing processing only on the rear image region where the rear image determination section 6 determines the image on the 2(N-1)th page to be the rear image for the image on a (2N-1)th page on the image data of the double-sided document in the booklet form which has been read N times. It performs show-through effect removing processing only on the rear image region where the section 6 determines the image on the 2ä(N+1)-1}th page to be the rear image region for the image on the 2Nth page.
