PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clean exhaust gas, and to reduce the fuel consumption by controlling the combustion timing by the self-ignition in an internal combustion engine which comprises a cylinder 2, a piston 4 to be reciprocated in the cylinder toward a combustion chamber 5 at a top part thereof, an intake valve 8 to the combustion chamber, and an exhaust valve 9 from the combustion chamber and burns fuel/air mixture formed in the cylinder 2 by the self-ignition by compression in a vicinity of a top dead center at the end of the compression stroke by the advancing motion of the piston 4 toward the combustion chamber 5. SOLUTION: A sub combustion chamber 11 is communicated with the combustion chamber 5. An ignition plug 12 to perform spark ignition in a vicinity of the top dead center at the end of the compression stroke is provided so that the ignition plug faces the inside of the sub combustion chamber. The sub combustion chamber 11 and the combustion chamber 5 are demarcated by a bulkhead body 13 having a plurality of through holes 14 of small diameter so as to provide the function of a flame arrestor. The pressure of the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber 5 is increased to perform the self-ignition by the pressure wave caused by the combustion by the spark ignition by the ignition plug in the sub combustion chamber.
