A protective coating is formed on a metallic material surface by applying a treating agent comprising water, an alkali silicate, and a lubricating component to the surface and drying the treating agent. The coating film thereby formed has excellent anti-galling and rust preventive properties. If a lubricating component is present, the coating film also has excellent self-lubricating properties. |
