PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent thickness of lines in a character portion and deterioration in gradation performance and granularity in a dot portion, to remove an isolated point noise highly accurately, and to improve image quality. SOLUTION: It is decided whether a target pixel of an inputted image is a pixel to be thinned (step S11). When it is to be thinned (Yes in step S11), it is decided whether the target pixel is a character portion (step S12). When it is a character portion (Yes in step S12), processing for thinning is applied (step S13). When it is not a character portion (No in step S12), processing for less thinning is applied (step S14). In this way, thinning processing is applied to a character portion to prevent the thickness of lines and reproduction with clarity can be performed, and less thinning processing is applied to a pattern portion to improve the continuity of gradation and granularity.
