The switchgear (21) uses switch inserts (1) provided with switch insert contacts (6) on 2 opposing ends faces (3,4) and has a housing (22) containing at least one pair of switchgear contacts (29), for providing an on position upon insertion of the switch inserts and an off position upon removal of the latter. The switch inserts fit into the switchgear housing transverse to its longitudinal direction (R), the switchgear contacts pressed into contact with the switch insert contacts. An Independent claim for a switch insert for heavy current switchgear is also included.
