PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently mix fuel with air in an internal combustion engine of cylinder injection type. SOLUTION: One cycle of the internal combustion engine is set in six strokes advancing in the order of a stroke in which fuel is injected into a cylinder while air is sucked from an intake passage into the cylinder according to the downward movement of a piston 14, a stroke in which the air containing fuel in the cylinder is forced out to the intake passage according to the upward movement of the piston 14, a stroke in which the air containing fuel is suckingly returned from the intake passage to the cylinder according to the downward movement of the piston 14, a stroke in which the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder is ignited near a top dead center while being compressed according to the upward movement of the piston 14, a stroke in which the piston is pushed down by the expansion of combustion gas, and a stroke in which the expanded combustion gas is forced out to an exhaust passage according to the upward movement of the piston 14.
