PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which enables, by a simple mechanism and with small force, reduction of tension of an endless belt member to the lowest degree necessary and reduction of tension of the endless belt member to such a high degree that the belt member can be detached. SOLUTION: The tension release device which releases tension from the endless belt member stretched by rolls has: slide members which support rolls applying tension to the endless belt member, in such a manner that the rolls freely slide in a direction to reduce tension applied to the belt member; a biasing means which biases the slide members in a direction to apply tension to the belt member; and moving means which move slide members in a direction to reduce tension.
