PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform focusing scanning not damaging the continuity of a focusing evaluation value near scanning discontinuous points, to optimize an operation relating to the focusing scanning, and to improve the certainty and efficiency of the focusing scanning. SOLUTION: A system controller 10 searches a focusing point where the focusing evaluation value becomes the most appropriate value by the focusing scanning of obtaining the focusing evaluation value to be the guide of a focusing state from object image information and obtaining a plurality of focusing evaluation values while driving a focus lens 1a which changes the focusing state of an object image, drives the focus lens 1a to the focusing point and performs focusing. At the time of bisecting the entire scanning range and performing the focusing scanning, the system controller 10 lets second scanning be performed for a scanning range to one end partially overlapped with the scanning range of first scanning from a scanning start point to the other end near the scanning start point.
