PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat treatment apparatus for a steel wire rod, which prevents the fracture of the steel wire along with enhancing the efficiency of heat treatment for the steel wire rod. SOLUTION: The steel wire rod 1 is introduced into an oil tank 12 and is wound on a drum 16 for heat treatment. The drum 16 for heat treatment has several holes 36 and 36 formed on the winding face 16a, and a hollow center 17 formed inside so as to communicate with the holes 36 are 36. When the drum 16 for heat treatment is rotated, a cooling oil 14 is introduced into the hollow center 17 from a space between ribs 26 and 26, and flows out from the drum 16 through the hole 36. When a load produced in the steel wire rod 1 increases, the drum 16 is rotated by a device 60 for controlling the number of revolution to prevent the fracture of the steel wire rod 1.
