PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emulsion coating material for a building material hardly causing cracks in a coated film even when coated on the building material. SOLUTION: The emulsion coating material for the building material contains a polymer having an alkali-soluble monomer unit and an associating monomer unit, as a thickener. The alkali-soluble monomer unit preferably has a carboxy group, a sulfo group or a phosphoric acid group, or a salt thereof. The associating monomer unit preferably has a group represented by the formula -(R<SP>1</SP>-O)<SB>n</SB>-X-R<SP>2</SP>(wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is a methylene group, an ethylene group, a propylene group or a butylene group; n is 10-300; X is -C(=O)- or -C(=O)NH-; and R<SP>2</SP>is a 6-30C hydrocarbon group) in the side chain.
