Purification of an electrolyte from which the organic reaction pdt. of a cpd. with aliphatic unsaturation is separated, the pdt. being prepd. by contacting the aliphatic unsatd. cpd. with the electrolyte formed in an electrolytic cell, comprises treating the electrolyte in a separate treatment zone with an inorganic oxidising agent. The process effectively purifies the electrolyte, and prevents the separation of layers in the electrodes of the cell. The process can be carried out continuously for long periods, while the anode is maintained under practically constant operating conditions. Improved yields of alkylene oxide are obtained.
