A first display element (1) and a second display element (2) are provided placed one upon another. The first display element (1) comprises a liquid crystal panel (10) that holds a liquid crystal layer (18) between first and second transparent substrates (11, 12), a reflection polarizing plate (3) provided on the first transparent substrate (11) side, and a polarizing plate (4) provided on the second display element (2) side. In the example shown in Fig. 1, the reflection polarizing plate (3) and the polarizing plate (4) are commonly used by the first display element (1) and the second display element (2). This reflection polarizing plate (3), which transmits light vibrating in a specific direction and reflects light vibrating in a direction crossing the specific direction, is directly joined to the liquid crystal panel (10) via an adhesion layer having a uniform refractive index.
