<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the utilization efficiency of a backlight device for display without depending upon the incident angle of light. <P>SOLUTION: A retardation plate is further inserted between a cholesteric liquid crystal layer and a λ/4 plate of the backlight device for display arranged with a light source, the cholesteric liquid crystal layer and the λ/4 plate in this order. The refractive index in the thickness direction of the retardation plate is made higher than the average refractive index within the plane of the retardation plate by regulating the retardation value of the retardation plate to <100 nm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
