PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber manufacturing method which optimizes the point in time of ending D<SB>2</SB>treatment. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the optical fiber including a step of subjecting the optical fiber after drawing to heavy hydrogen treatment has a point in time when the difference between the transmission loss at 1,385 nm wavelength and the transmission loss at 1,420 nm wavelength of the optical fiber before the heavy hydrogen treatment and the difference between the transmission loss at 1,385 nm wavelength and the transmission loss at 1,420 nm wavelength of the optical fiber after the heavy hydrogen treatment differ by≥0.01 dB/km.
