PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation system that allows a driver to specify a place by moving a pointer without the need to scroll a screen, when the driver specifies a certain place with a pointer within the screen on which a road map is currently displayed. SOLUTION: The navigation system displays a map screen or a map screen plus a self-position mark on a display device from the current location obtained by arithmetic unit for self-position and map data read out by a recording medium reader. The navigation system is configured such that the map screens are scrolled when an input device is operated so as to make a pointer, serving as a mark of the center point for specifying the position of location registry of a desired destination or a stopping-off site that appears on the screen of the display device or for modifying a map scale, move arbitrarily within a free moving area of the pointer on the screen of the display device by the operation of an input device, and to make the pointer move outside the free moving area.
