PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retard failure of ink ejection from nozzles even if a single pass recording system using a line type ink jet printer head is employed. SOLUTION: A head drive section 10 for reciprocating a line type ink jet printer head 3 employing a single pass recording system in the arranging direction of nozzles, i.e. the main scanning direction, is provided. Head movement processing for moving the ink jet printer head in the arranging direction of nozzles through driving control of the head drive section 10 and nozzle position alteration processing for shifting the position of ink drop ejecting nozzles in the ink jet printer head 3, as a whole, reversely to the moving direction of the head at a pitch corresponding to the movement of the ink jet printer head 3 are then effected. Since the position of ink drop ejecting nozzles in the ink jet printer head 3 is shifted as a whole, the number of nonejecting nozzles is decreased and failure of ink ejection from the nozzles is retarded.
