PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary type variable resistor with a switch which prevents quick breaking of the switch. SOLUTION: A switch mechanism S is provided with a cam 25, attached to a shaft 17 and provided with a projected part 21 as well as a recessed part 22 on the outer periphery thereof, a conductive switching piece 26, equipped with a column type projected part 27 abutted against the outer periphery of the cam 25 which is energized by a coil spring 8 and fixed to a case 16 while being communicated with a switch terminal 23a, and a conductive leaf spring 28, extended from a switch terminal 23b to a part immediately above the column type projected part 27 of the switching piece 26. In this case, the column type projected part 27 is abutted against the outer periphery of the cam 25 and the leaf spring 28 through a contact 30 to communicate between the switch terminals 23a, 23b whereby the switching mechanism is constituted so that the contact 30 of the leaf spring 28 is separated from the column type projected part 27 at first and the switch is put OFF when the column type projected part 27 is elevated by the projected part 21 of the cam 25 against the force of the coil spring 28 over the projected part 21 and is dropped into the recessed part 22 lower than the circular outer periphery of the cam 25.
