PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide at low cost a light emitting element that can emit light not only in the visible light band but also in the ultraviolet band and infrared band with high luminance, and that can be made small in size. SOLUTION: The light emitting electrode is constructed of a metal oxide structure having a whisker in the light emitting element in which the light emitting electrode and a cold cathode are placed opposed to each other. It is desirable that as the metal oxide constituting the whisker, the metal oxide having a band gap of 1.5-7.7eV is used. The light emitting electrode and the cold cathode are arranged in a vacuum container or in a container filled with a gas. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
