PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-strength polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fiber. SOLUTION: The method for producing the carbon fiber comprises carrying out a primary drawing treatment of a PAN-based flame-proofed fiber having 1.3-1.4 specific gravity while regulating the flame-proofed fiber so that the modulus, the specific gravity and the crystallite size by a wide-angle X-ray measurement (at 26°diffraction angle) of the flame-proofed fiber may be in prescribed ranges at the first carbonization step, and carrying out the secondary drawing treatment while regulating the primarily drawn fiber so that the specific gravity and the crystallite size by a wide-angle X-ray measurement (at 26°diffraction angle) of the primarily drawn fiber may be in prescribed range, in an inert atmosphere at the first carbonization step, and carbonizing the secondary drawn fiber within a range in which the fiber stress is within a prescribed range in the second carbonization step.
