PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel slab heating furnace operating method for reducing the unit requirement of fuel when heating steel slabs of lot groups of different production speeds. SOLUTION: In the steel slab heating furnace operating method for heating steel slabs of a plurality of lot groups of different production speeds, a lot with the maximum production speed out of the lot group is defined as a reference lot 10, and steel slabs of the reference lot and the lots 11 other than the reference lot (non-reference lots) are heated while maintaining the furnace temperature (the reference furnace temperature T<SB>0</SB>) of the reference lot. The unit requirement of fuel can be reduced without any loss of heat accumulation in a furnace body caused by the change in the furnace temperature as the production speed is changed.
