A valerolactone compound represented by the formula (I): (I) (wherein R<1> and R<2> each independently represents hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl; R<3> represents hydrogen or methyl; and R<4> represents propyl, 1-propenyl, or phenyl; provided that not both of R<1> and R<2> are hydrogen); the valerolactone compound represented by the formula (II): (II) and a process for producing that compound; and a perfume composition containing any of the valerolactone compounds.
