The apparatus (11) has an inverter controller (22) directing an inverter (18) based on its variable frequency oscillation function by selectively impressing a frequency in a stable operation window and another frequency. A lamp wattage detector (21) monitors a voltage and a current across a discharge lamp (12). A time ratio controller (20) directs a time ratio to alternately impress inverter outputs at the two frequencies. An independent claim is also included for a luminaire.
