The invention relates to a method for verifying the function of a control system for passenger protection means in a motor vehicle. An automatic check is carried out in a sensor device comprising three acceleration sensors. The seismic masses pertaining to the acceleration sensors are capacitively displaced using a force which corresponds to a value of about 10 to 15 G. A weighted sum is created from the output signals. Said sum has to amount to zero so that a release signal can be emitted which is used for a ignition signal.
