A heart rate monitor comprises a measuring unit with a control unit, also controlling a user interface with selection and display devices. In the sub-operating mode (502) of the set mode (302), a user selects switching on of the automatic setting of heart rate, I.e. from an off to an on mode and a sub-operating mode is excluded when the user sets the heart rate limit. The sub-loop sequence of the heart rate measuring mode comprises an entirely new sub-operating mode (600), in which the user's heart rate is shown and the unit is asked for the type of exercise. On the basis of the information received from the user, the device determines the upper and lower limits of the heart rate during the exercise. Operating modes can also be added to the main loop sequence, allowing easy addition of new parts to the software of the heart rate monitor.
