The method involves associating time-dependent switching states for automatically outputting messages to influence the traffic flow with time-dependent traffic situation measurement data by storing the measurement data and switching states over a defined evaluation period and comparing actual traffic problems resulting from the measurement data with traffic problems derivable from the switching states to determine a quality indicator.
