A process for manufacturing ion exchange membranes comprises the steps of: <SL> <LI>a) providing a solution of a precursor polymer having a polymeric backbone and pendant groups selected from -SO2X, -COX and -POX2, wherein X is a halogen; <LI>b) hydrolysing the solution of the precursor polymer to convert at least one of the pendant groups into the salt form, and <LI>c) casting hydrolysed polymer into a membrane. </SL> Preferably, the precurser polymer is a fluorinated carbon polymer. The hydrolysis step typically comprises contacting the polymer solution with an alkalimetal hydroxide. The resulting membrane may be further treated with an acid to convert the polymer to its acid form. The ion exchange membranes may be used in fuel cells. |
