Methods of preparing substantially pure cannabinoids and cannabinoid acids, or products enriched in them, from plant material comprise obtaining an extract containing the cannabinoid or cannabinoid acid and subjecting it to a chromatographic step to produce a partially purified extract. The partially purified extract is dissolved in a first solvent, any insoluble material and the solvent are removed, the product thus obtained is dissolved in a second solvent and insoluble material and solvent are removed to obtain the substantially pure cannabinoid or cannabinoid acid or products enriched in the cannabinoid or cannabinoid acid. The first and second solvents are different. One solvent is substantially more polar than, and the other is substantially less polar than, the cannabinoid or cannabinoid acid to be purified. In particular, one solvent may be an alcohol, preferably methanol, and the other a C5-C12 alkane, preferably pentane. Substantially pure preparations of W 9 tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, cannabidiolic acid, W <9> tetrahydrocannabinol, W <9> tetrahydrocannabivarin, cannabigerol and cannabicliromene are disclosed.
