PURPOSE: An overheat preventing apparatus for projector is provided to accurately detect temperature of the projector and prevent overheat, by changing the position of temperature sensor in accordance with the installation direction and position of the projector. CONSTITUTION: An overheat preventing apparatus comprises a temperature sensor(3) for detecting temperature of the highest temperature area regardless of the configuration of projector installation, from among the temperatures of interior of the projector; a plurality of switch circuit units(7,8) for detecting position of the temperature sensor and outputting different signals in accordance with the position of the projector; and a cut-off unit(4) for comparing reference temperatures which differ in accordance with the output signal from the switch unit, with the temperature detected by the temperature sensor, and cutting off operation of the lamp if the temperature detected by the temperature sensor is higher than the preset temperature.
