摘要 PURPOSE: A device and a method for coding and decoding an image by using spatial predictive coding are provided to use only pixels of the upper block and the left block of the current block in 4.times.4 spatial predictive coding, thereby reducing an amount of calculation and enabling simultaneous processing with an upper right or lower left block. CONSTITUTION: A temporal/spatial predictive coding unit(100) performs spatial predictive coding for an intra-image and temporal predictive coding for an inter-image. When the temporal/spatial predictive coding unit(100) performs the spatial predictive coding, a luminance component and a chronimance component are respectively predictively coded and the prediction is performed using values of pixels in adjacent blocks. A conversion/quantization unit(101) performs conversion for predictively coded information through DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) and the like and quantizes the converted predictively coded information, to perform loss compression for the quantized information. And an entropy coding unit(102) performs entropy coding for the quantized information to generate a bit string.
