PURPOSE: A holding material for a catalytic converter is provided to maintain holding performance of a catalytic carrier and to obtain excellent durability against wind erosion effects of exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION: A catalytic converter comprises a catalytic carrier formed in a cylinder shape; a casing receiving the catalytic carrier; and a holding material(3) mounted to the catalytic carrier and interposed in a gap between the catalytic carrier and casing. To make the holding material, an inorganic fiber is formed in a mat shape or a cylinder shape. At least the area(A) of exhaust gas inlet side of the holding material is lower than another area(B) of the holding material, in the substance.
