PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape driver which can assure the recording capacity of each partition segmented during preformatting even if a tape feed speed error has occurred in a magnetic tape housed in a tape cassette. SOLUTION: The tape driver 1 converts the recording capacity of the partition assigned from a host computer into a frame number A1 (a step S11) and converts the consumption of the magnetic tape 21 by the variation in the tape feed speed corresponding to the frame number A1 into a frame number A2 (a step S12). And, the driver records the partition corresponding to the above recording capacity at the frame number A1+ A2 (a step S13) to the recording tape 21, records the next reference area to the magnetic tape 21 (a step S14), and registers the frame number MAXAFN of the partition final frame to an MIC (Memory in Cassette) 22 (a step S15) to end the processing by the flow chart.
