PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing succinic anhydride with a small-sized apparatus in shortened reaction time. SOLUTION: Succinic anhydride is produced by the hydrogenation reaction of maleic anhydride in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction is carried out by using a circulating reaction apparatus composed of a reactor 10 receiving maleic anhydride, the catalyst and hydrogen, a mixer 16 to mix the reaction liquid with hydrogen and attached to the reactor 10, an external heat-exchanger 30 for heating the reaction liquid in the reactor 10 and remove the reaction heat, and a pump 32 for circulating the reaction liquid. Maleic anhydride, the catalyst and hydrogen are supplied to the reactor 10, the reaction liquid in the reactor 10 is transferred to the heat-exchanger 30 and then to the mixer 16 to circulate the liquid, and the hydrogenation reaction is carried out by mixing the reaction liquid with hydrogen by the mixer 16 in the reactor 10.
