PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a braking device of a drive unit for a passenger conveyor which automatically detects a state of brake lining generating brake action, and facilitates maintenance operation. SOLUTION: The braking device is forwardly and backwardly provided with a braking body with respect to the brake rotating body rotating with the drive unit 1. The device is also provided with an electromagnetic mechanism 4 which energizingly holds the braking body at the position separated from the brake rotating body, and pressing the braking body to the brake rotating body with an elastic energizing body 11 to be deenergized. One side of the operation enlarging mechanism 20 is locked to the braking body and forward and backward operation of the braking body is enlarged. The device is provided with an excess displacement detector 17 which operates when the brake lining of the brake rotating body is excessively worn out, and the displacement of the operation enlarging mechanism 20 due to the forward and backward operation of the braking body exceeds a predetermined position to inform occurrence of abnormality by the stop of the passenger conveyor and the operation of the excess displacement detector 17.
