PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which an original is conveyed to a reading means used only in the case of reading both surfaces of the original only at both surfaces reading time, in the reading apparatus which has two reading means and which can read both the surfaces of the original. SOLUTION: A sub-carriageway combined with a main carriageway used for one side surface reading operation of the original is provided, and a CIS 50 and a feed roller 52 are arranged on the sub-carriageway. The original conveyed to the main carriageway is once stopped on the way, the original is conveyed in a reverse direction after a switching guide 54 is switched, and conveyed to the sub-carriageway. The conveyed original is once introduced to an original tray for both the surfaces of an upper cover 56, is again conveyed, its upper surface is read by the CIS 50, its lower surface is read by charge coupled devices, and both the surfaces are thus read.
