PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method whereby a layered double hydroxide is manufactured at a low material cost and a manufacturing cost with a low environmental load without producing a by-product, such as a sodium salt, and without needing filtration and washing. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the layered double hydroxide comprises reacting a suspension which contains a mixture of a trivalent metal compound and at least one divalent metal compound selected from the group consisting of hydroxides, oxides, and carbonates of divalent metals and their mixtures and does not substantially contain an alkali metal salt. As the trivalent metal compound, aluminum hydroxide at least subjected to wet grinding is used. The layered double hydroxide is represented by formula (I): [M<SP>2+</SP><SB>1-x</SB>M<SP>3+</SP><SB>x</SB>(OH)<SB>2</SB>]<SP>x+</SP>[A<SP>n-</SP><SB>x/n</SB>×yH<SB>2</SB>O]<SP>x-</SP>(wherein M<SP>2+</SP>is a divalent metal ion; M<SP>3+</SP>is a trivalent metal ion; A is an anion; n is the valence of A; x is 0<x≤0.33; and y is a real number >0).
