PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating device for a passenger conveyer that can contribute to the improvement of working efficiency by detecting accurately people who are likely to use or who are surely using the conveyer with easy installation and maintenance of a detector. SOLUTION: This operating device for a passenger conveyor includes a first detector 7 for detecting whether there is a person who has reached an area enclosed by both handrails 4 of a gate 1 and a second detector 8 placed on a floor board 1A near a lower portion of the hand rails 4, for detecting whether there is an person who is passing through the gate 1 or the peripheral area of the gate 1, a first timer 9 and a second timer 10 each to be operated when the first detector 7 and the second detector 8 detect a person respectively, and when the second detector 8 detects a person, the device drives the step 2 and the handrails 4 at a low speed and for a short time, and when the first detector 7 detects a person, the device drives at a normal speed and for a fixed period of time.
