PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of being unable to understand whether a car of an elevator stopped by failure is put in a balanced state or an unbalanced state with a counterweight. SOLUTION: A car inside load detector (unillustrated) is arranged in the car 4 for detecting mass in the car 4. Car inside load state displays 13A to 13C having a display are arranged in the car 4 and a bottom part of a hoistway 6 for detecting and displaying a balanced or unbalanced state of the car 4 and the counterweight 6 from output of this car inside load detector. When the car 4 stops by failure, a maintenance engineer 14 determines whether or not the car 4 can self-travel by the displays 13A to 13C. When the car cannot self-travel, weights 15A to 15D are installed on a speed regulator rope 10. When the car can self-travel, the car 4 is made to self-travel by opening a brake (unillustrated).
