PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt tensioner being usable even if positioning an outer cylinder in an upper side. SOLUTION: This belt tensioner 10 is provided with the outer cylinder 11 positioned in the upper side, a piston rod 18 positioned in a lower side, a delivery check valve 45 obstructing the flow from an oil sump chamber 30 to a high pressure oil chamber 33 positioned in an orifice oil passage 43 of a partition member 40, and a spring 47 energizing the delivery check valve 45 in a direction of closing the valve.
