PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an evaporation tape having oblique anisotrophy to perform reliable reciprocating recording and reproduction. SOLUTION: A recording and reproducing circuit 12 is provided among a recording amplifier 11a and a reproducing amplifier 11b and a recording and reproducing controller 13. The recording and reproducing circuit 12 is provided with an analog equalizer 32a for forward direction and an analog equalizer 32b for reverse direction, a sequence detector 36a for forward direction and a sequence detector 36b for reverse direction and an encoder/decoder 37a for forward direction and an encode/decoder 37b for reverse direction and one side of them is selected respectively in response to the running direction of a magnetic tape.
